DAY 71: Abel Tasman, Here We Come!

Emma and I caught the bus from our hostel in Nelson to Marahau (the start of the Abel Tasman Track) and started our 3 day hike. The ride took about 2 hours, so we were excited to be on our feet and moving.

FUN FACT #31: The track is named after Abel Tasman, who was the first European explorer to sight New Zealand in 1642.  Its the smallest of New Zealand's national parks, but is also one of the most beautiful.

The track is usually hiked in the summer months, so because it was April, there were not that many people on the trail. Emma and I enjoyed our Day 1 hike and took lots of breaks on different beaches. We had wonderful weather (for a change) and we made it to our first campsite (Anchorage Camp) with plenty of day light left. We broke out some food and munched and searched for shells on the beach. That night, we made friends with some nice German guys and two Kiwi families with a bunch of kids. (I know, I know... the education majors flock to the children...)

It was pretty chilly that night, but we were up early for the next day of hiking.
